The severity of mental health problems in young people after gastric sleeve surgery does not decrease despite significant weight loss. This has been shown by a study published in the journal. Lancet Child and Adolescent Health.
In the new study, researchers analyzed mental health problems before and after bariatric surgery (stomach volume reduction) in all young people in Sweden between 2007 and 2017.
Those who had surgery were initially more likely than others to suffer from mental disorders. Bariatric surgery did not ease the problems faced by teens: They were still more likely than their peers to need medication to treat mental illness. Additionally, patients had a slightly higher risk of developing alcohol dependence after surgery.
“Surgical treatment of obesity has a very positive effect on weight, blood sugar and blood pressure control, but when it comes to mental health, this neither improves nor worsens after bariatric surgery,” said Martin Neovius, professor of clinical epidemiology at Karolinska Institutet.
