Rachel Elward, Senior Lecturer in Neuroscience and Neuropsychology at London South Bank University said Talk about how a child’s forgetfulness may be a sign of a rare disease called developmental amnesia.
Memory problems in children may manifest themselves as rapid forgetting of many events, including important events such as birthday celebrations. This forgetfulness has nothing to do with disorganization, stress or great psychological stress.
The doctor explained that such disorders could be signs of developmental amnesia caused by oxygen starvation (hypoxia) in the brain. This can occur due to a traumatic birth where the baby becomes stuck in the birth canal. Other potential causes are respiratory failure and cardiac arrest after birth. Hypoxia can damage the brain, especially the hippocampus, which is responsible for converting short-term memory into long-term memory.
The main symptoms of developmental amnesia are problems with spatial memory – the tendency to get lost in a familiar environment and forget where this or that thing is. The child’s inability to remember important events that occurred in his life is also an alarming sign of the disease. Impairments in hierarchical temporary memory may also indicate developmental amnesia. They involve forgetting regularly performed actions, such as doing homework or attending classes.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to normalize hippocampal function after damage. That’s why developmental amnesia treatments aim to help children make the most of their existing abilities.
