The Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church (PRC) decided to abolish the Order of Tsarevich Demetrius. This was reported by Web site Department of External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate.
On December 27, at the Patriarchal and Synodal residence at the Danilov Monastery in Moscow, the last meeting of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church this year was held under the leadership of Patriarch Kirill. At this meeting, changes were made to the Russian Orthodox Church Awards Regulations. Accordingly, the Order of Holy Tsarevich Demetrius was abolished as a church-wide award.
The three-degree Order of Tsarevich Dmitry the Just was awarded to Patriarch II on 29 September 1997. It was founded by Alexy’s decision together with the Russian Children’s Fund. It was awarded to citizens and organizations that provide outstanding services in the care and protection of children who find themselves in difficult living conditions, especially the disabled, orphans and street children. From 2018 to 2022, 18 people were ordered.
Tsarevich Dmitry was the youngest son of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. He died in Uglich in 1591, at the age of eight, under circumstances that are not fully explained. Opponents of the future Tsar Boris Godunov accused him of murdering the Tsarevich. Dmitry’s death caused a political crisis in the country called the “Time of Troubles”, which lasted until 1613. A large number of impostors appeared in Russia, pretending to be surviving princes. The most famous of them were False Dmitry I and False Dmitry II.
In 1606, Tsarevich Dmitry was canonized as the “miracle worker of Uglich, Moscow and all Russia” and became one of the most revered Russian saints. Memorial day is celebrated on May 28 (May 15 in the old way).
