The Russian Orthodox Church (PRC) equates arbitrary surgical or medical abortion with murder, regardless of the stage of pregnancy and the method of execution TASSIt refers to a document approved by the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church.
The Synod adopted the document “On the immunity of human life from the moment of birth” developed by the Inter-Council Entity of the Russian Orthodox Church. It will now be approved by the Council of Bishops as “Explanation and development of the relevant provisions of the Fundamentals of the Social Concept of the Russian Orthodox Church.”
“The Church clearly equates arbitrary surgical or medical abortion with murder, regardless of the stage of pregnancy and the method of its commission,” the text reads.
The document also states that the claim that abortion is possible before the embryo becomes viable (to the extent of its intrauterine development that can survive outside the mother’s body with medical assistance) is unacceptable.
The text also emphasizes the position of the Russian Orthodox Church that a person’s life begins from the moment of fertilization, that the person already has the right to live in the womb, and that the embryo should not be considered a part of the mother’s body.
