The most effective treatments against obesity were bariatric surgery and the drugs Munjaro and Zepbound. This has been shown by a study published in the journal. JAMA.

Scientists analyzed 126 high-quality scientific publications, choosing from tens of thousands of articles. The most effective treatments for obesity were bariatric surgery (25-30% weight loss) and the tirzepatide-based drugs Munjaro and Zepbound (21% weight loss after 72 weeks of use). Then came medications based on semaglutide Ozempic and Vegovi (8-21% weight loss) and behavioral therapy (5-10% weight loss). The authors explained that the effectiveness of the methods varies between people depending on how their feelings of fullness and hunger change during therapy. The results highlight the fact that obesity is a disease, not a problem of willpower, and should be studied as such.

Bariatric surgery and medications are usually recommended for people with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or for people with a BMI of at least 27 and obesity-related disorders such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, or cardiovascular disease. BMI is calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by the square of height in meters and assesses whether a person is overweight or underweight.
