Injections to destroy fat cells based on phosphatidylcholine and sodium deoxycholate lead to serious side effects: cysts, scars, skin deformations and serious infections. This was reported by health day.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns that lipolytic injections designed to destroy fat cells may cause long-term adverse effects.

The agency has received reports of consumers injured by injections of the following brands: Aqualyx, Lipodissolve, Lipo Lab, and Kabelline. Common ingredients of medications include phosphatidylcholine (PPC) and sodium deoxycholate (DC). These substances were used individually or together.

The agency says the FDA has approved only one injectable lipolytic drug, a prescription drug called Kybella. It contains deoxycholic acid produced by intestinal bacteria. This substance helps break down fats during digestion. The agency notes that only one injection site is approved: the double chin.

Improperly administered or unapproved medications can increase the risk of scarring, skin infections, and serious complications. Safe and effective use of lipolytics requires calculation of the amount, correct injection site, and method of needle placement; therefore, only medical professionals can inject lipolytics.
