Scientists from the University of Edinburgh (UK) found that taste and touch receptors on the tongue form unique patterns, like fingerprints, giving everyone a special tactile sensation and taste preferences. The results of the research were published at: magazine Scientific Reports.

There are up to 200 such “papillae” in every square centimeter of the organ called taste buds on the tongue. It also has filamentous papillae that lack taste buds. They determine the texture of food and play a role in informing the brain about hunger levels.

Using 3D images of more than 2,000 papillae on the tongues of 15 people, the AI was able to determine which language belonged to each of the participants in almost half of the cases. The authors also used artificial intelligence to find that women and young adults in their group had more pointed papillae.

Past studies have noted that women and young adults have a higher density of mushroom-shaped papillae, which is linked to differences in taste perception. They are more sensitive.

According to the authors, this study brings us closer to understanding the complex architecture of language surfaces. The discovery will also help create personalized dishes tailored to specific people’s tastes.
