Scientists from the University of Tsukuba found that low-intensity physical training accompanied by rhythmic music improves the brain’s executive functions (attention, memory and thinking). The research was published in the journal neuroscience.
Previous research has shown that people with high sensitivity to rhythmic music that makes them want to dance (groove music) can improve the functioning of the prefrontal cortex just by listening to the rhythm. In the new study, scientists found that the effect can be enhanced by a combination of music and physical exercise.
In the experiment, 48 healthy people aged 18 to 26 performed very low-intensity aerobic exercise for three minutes while listening to rhythmic music. Participants who reported that their bodies responded to the rhythm of the music during exercise accompanied by emotional arousal showed increased activity in the brain’s left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for executive functions such as attention, memory and thinking. These abilities allow you to plan the actions necessary to achieve a goal and voluntarily concentrate your attention on the object needed at the moment.
The results of the study will allow us to develop fun, easy and effective exercises to improve brain functions.
