A court in the United States acquitted 71-year-old Glynn Simmons, who spent 48 years in prison. This was reported by the Associated Press. TASS.
The court found that the crime for which Simmons was found guilty was not committed by him.
In 1975, Simmons was sentenced to death. It was commuted to life imprisonment in 1977.
The man spent the longest prison term in US history (48 years, 1 month and 18 days) for a miscarriage of justice, the agency said. After his release, he has the right to demand compensation of 175 thousand dollars from the state of Oklahoma, where the case is heard.
Missouri court in February 2023 acquitted Lamar Johnson, 50, who spent almost 30 years in prison. The judge said the evidence of Johnson’s innocence was indeed credible, meaning there was no way to continue keeping an innocent man behind bars.
