Disease-related inability to burp causes loud stomach rumbling, which causes patients to feel embarrassed, anxious, and can lead to failure in personal relationships and work. This has been shown by a study published in the journal. Neurogastroenterology and Motility.

Inability to belch, also known as retrograde cricopharyngeal dysfunction, is caused by the inability of part of the esophageal sphincter to relax to allow gas to escape. In the new study, researchers interviewed 199 adults with the disease.

Most participants reported bloating, gurgling noises, excessive gas, and difficulty clearing vomit. Only half of patients discussed their symptoms with their doctor, and 90% felt they were not receiving adequate care. Participants also reported shame, anxiety, depression, and the negative impact of their illness on relationships and work.

The authors concluded that the inability to burp is more than a physical problem. This situation significantly affects people’s daily lives, relationships and mental health. More efforts are needed to raise people’s awareness of the disease to increase detection rates and improve treatment.
