The fire was extinguished in a short time with the intervention of fire brigades. This was announced by the Consul General of Greece in New York, Dinos Konstantinou, in an interview with the Greek television channel ERT-1.
“An unknown person tried to set fire to the entrance of the Greek consulate in New York by using a flammable liquid that he poured on the factories near the entrance,” Constantinou said. Consul General said, “Thanks to the immediate intervention of the fire brigade, the fire did not spread to a large area. I would like to express my gratitude to them.” He also added that no one was injured as a result of the incident.
Konstantinou noted that similar cases had occurred before. “We cannot know their motives. During the investigation carried out by police authorities, they will identify the perpetrator – there is also video footage from security cameras – and we will find out more,” he said.
The Consulate General building also hosts the residence of Greece’s Consul General and Permanent Representative to the UN. Constantinou noted that the FBI is expected to participate in the investigation.
The Consul General emphasized that a significant part of the Greek diaspora lives in the USA. “Although there is no official record, we estimate that approximately 500,000 Greek Americans live in and around New York City. “Their contribution to preserving traditions, preserving ties with their homeland and protecting Greece’s interests is invaluable,” he stressed.
Previously, the Consulate General of Greece in New York hosted an exhibition featuring the works of Greek artists living in the USA. One of those on display was the Greek flag, designed in pink instead of the traditional blue and white stripes. Following harsh criticism from Dimitris Natsios, leader of the right-wing opposition Niki party, Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis ordered the flag to be removed from the exhibition. “Our flag is blue and white, dyed red only by the blood of our heroes,” Natsios said. Designer Georgia Lale, the creator of the pink flag, told the Vima newspaper that she created it as a symbol of the fight against domestic violence. She said: “I regret that my work has been misinterpreted. “Victims of femicide and domestic violence are the heroes of the struggle for the right to life and freedom in Greece and around the world.”
