Scientists from Yale University (USA) found that the highest sexual desire in women is observed in the second phase of the menstrual cycle, during this period women often take the initiative on their own. The results of the study were presented as follows: magazine Journal of Sex Research (JSR).
The authors recruited a sample of 97 women; each of these was tested once a day for 15 days to determine levels of the hormones estradiol and progesterone. Thus, each woman participated in two testing sessions with different chances of getting pregnant during her menstrual period. They also completed surveys about their sexual desire, arousal, and frequency of sexual activity during this period.
The processes occurring during the menstrual cycle can be described in three stages that correspond to changes in the ovaries. These are follicular, ovulatory and luteal phases. The first phase of the cycle, known as the follicular phase, usually lasts about two weeks. A bloody secretion occurs in the first 3-7 days of this stage. On the seventh day of the cycle, menstruation ends and the endometrium begins to actively renew itself. At the same time, the follicle and egg mature. During this period, the body actively produces estrogen. Then comes the second stage – ovulation, which lasts about two days.
The luteal phase is a period in the female cycle that begins after the release of the egg from the follicle and the growth of the corpus luteum, stimulating the production of progesterone. Progesterone prepares the inner surface of the uterus for the egg to attach. This phase takes about 2 weeks.
Scientists found that high levels of sexual desire are observed at the end of the first stage and continue until about the middle of the third stage. This period is accompanied by the production of large amounts of estrogen. During the ovulation phase, the body is optimally prepared for pregnancy. Therefore, the woman experiences the greatest sexual desire and shows the highest activity.
