The United States will announce the deployment of a multinational force to the Red Sea on December 15 to deter Houthi attacks on civilian ships. Portal reports axios.
“The United States is expected to announce on Friday the activation of a special, modernized multinational task force in the Red Sea to deter and counter further Houthi attacks,” the portal writes, citing two Israeli and US officials.
Special Representative for Yemen Tim Lenderking, who visited the Gulf countries, asked his counterparts in Saudi Arabia, Oman and Qatar to convey warning messages to the Houthis. U.S. officials said many countries in the region have conveyed similar messages to the Houthis over the past two weeks, making clear that attacks on ships and Israel are “unacceptable.”
U.S. officials acknowledged that the warnings had not yet prompted the Houthis to reduce their attacks.
Houthi attacks have brought commercial shipping to the southern Israeli port of Eilat to a near halt.
