Sleepiness during the day and inadequate rest at night may be a symptom of idiopathic hypersomnia, a neurological disorder. This conclusion was reached by researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA). results published In the journal Neurology.

Symptoms of idiopathic hypersomnolence include excessive daytime sleepiness, excessive sleepiness at night, difficulty waking, and confusion. This condition negatively affects the person’s quality of life, making it difficult to complete work responsibilities and daily tasks. It is stated that idiopathic hypersomnia and narcolepsy are not similar. People with narcolepsy may experience bouts of excessive sleepiness during the day, but people with narcolepsy sleep a moderate amount of time at night and feel more alert after a nap.

792 people participated in the study, which aimed to determine the prevalence of idiopathic hypersomnia. The average age of the participants was 59 years. The researchers collected information about the volunteers’ daytime sleepiness intensity, fatigue severity, and time spent asleep on weekends and weekdays. Researchers estimated that 12 people (1.5% of subjects) suffered from idiopathic hypersomnolence. These findings suggest that the disease is as common as epilepsy, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

Additional research is needed to determine the causes of idiopathic hypersomnolence and develop treatment methods.
