Stem cell-based therapy during cardiac catheterization may improve the quality of life and reduce the risk of death in patients with severe heart failure. This was shown by a Mayo Clinic (MC) study published in the journal Stem Cell Translational Medicine.

An unhealthy lifestyle and heart attacks can lead to heart failure, which is the heart’s ability to pump blood around the body. This condition causes a decrease in quality of life due to shortness of breath, fatigue and swelling in the legs.

Standard treatment for heart failure includes lifestyle changes, medications, and pacemaker implantation. But standard regimens are not suitable for everyone, especially in the later stages of the disease.

The new study included 315 patients with advanced heart failure from 39 hospitals in 10 countries. All received standard treatment, and some were randomly assigned to receive stem cell therapy at the time of cardiac catheterization.

During a one-year follow-up, patients previously diagnosed with left chamber enlargement reported improved quality of life after stem cell therapy. They also required fewer hospitalizations and experienced fewer deaths.
