First of all, frequent consumption of large amounts of alcohol has a negative effect on a person’s brain and cognitive functions. Elena Tikhomirova, general practitioner and nutritionist at SM-Clinic, told socialbites.ca.

“Alcohol destroys neurons. And as has been proven before, even if nerve cells are regenerated, if you drink too much, a person’s cognitive functions decrease. Therefore, excessive alcohol is extremely harmful to brain function,” noted Tikhomirova.

Additionally, consumption of processed vegetable oil, called hydrogenated oil, has a negative effect on brain function. A classic example of such a product is margarine.

“When a person consumes large amounts of hydrogenated fat, it is not processed by the body and is stored in cells, including brain cells. Accordingly, this leads to premature destruction and decreased cognitive function,” said the nutritionist.

The doctor also noted the negative impact of eating large amounts of fast food on brain function.

“Such products simultaneously contain large amounts of fat, carbohydrates, salt and various food additives. All this has an extremely negative impact on brain function. A classic example is snacks, chips, burgers, shawarma, etc. And if you drink them with sweet drinks, this further contributes to the development of obesity, and its presence leads to a decrease in brain activity,” explained the expert.

Moreover, according to him, eating sugar harms the brain. The doctor noted that glucose is a fuel needed by the entire body. And carbohydrates should be in the diet. But if you periodically reduce their number and allow periods of moderate hunger, this will have a positive effect on brain function.

“If a person eats a large amount of carbohydrates quickly and slowly at the same time, that is, it can be cake or french fries, these carbohydrates enter the blood in large quantities, the blood sugar level rises sharply and the person experiences feeling of drowsiness. This is due to the fact that a large amount of carbohydrates blocks the center of vital activity and the person becomes lazy, does not want to do anything, just sleeps. “Of course, this does not destroy the brain cells, but it makes it extremely weak and inactive,” Tikhomirova summarized.
