People over the age of 80 who have never done strength training before have achieved success in this regard. The results of the study conducted by scientists from the University of La Frontera (Chile) were presented as follows: magazine Journals of Human Kinetics.

The experiment was conducted for 12 weeks. During this period, a special training program was applied to 29 healthy elderly people (17 people represent the 65-75 age subgroup, the rest are over 85 years old). This included weight training three times a week. None of the participants had done regular strength training before.

At the beginning, end and middle of the experiment, scientists collected data on the participants’ physical condition. Scientists expected the oldest participants to show the weakest results, but this turned out not to be the case. Participants over the age of 85 gained relatively more muscle mass and strength than others.

Scientists noted that although sports are beneficial even at such a late age, it is important to take into account the condition of your body. In case of “excessive exertion” of sports, it can have negative effects on health, especially in old age.
