“From today (…) we are starting to regularly monitor the quality of Russian honey on a monthly basis. “We will examine the honey on our country’s shelves at fairs,” said Protasov at the press conference he held on the subject.
The head of Roskachestvo announced that Russia is one of the three main consumers of honey in the world. According to him, about 80% of our country’s population consumes honey, and one in every six Russians does this every day. Honey is most popular in the North Caucasus and Volga Federal Districts. Linden, flower and buckwheat varieties are in greater demand than others.
Problems in the honey market included product counterfeiting, the sale of cheap types of honey under the name of expensive honey, and the sale of “ordinary” honey under the name of regional brands, Protasov said.
According to the head of Roskachestvo, checks show that about 40% of honey sold can be attributed to direct counterfeiting (this is not honey), and in every fourth case, cheap varieties are sold under the guise of expensive varieties.
