Polish scientists from Jagiellonian University discovered 52 painted rock shelters in central Tanzania. Some of the drawings disappeared over time, but strange images of humanoid figures with huge heads remained intact. The scientific study was published on: magazine Ancient ages.
The rock painting was done with red pigment and there were no pets on the panel. This led scientists to believe that the image was quite old and dated back to the time of hunter-gatherer societies in the region.
The panel depicts animals resembling antelope, eland, buffalo and even giraffe, as well as a small number of large-headed humanoid figures. Scientists first suggested that these were images of people who could transform into buffalo. However, since no other similar painting has been found in this region, they may be depicting something else.
Archaeologists suggest that the giant heads may have had hairstyles or headdresses. It has also been hypothesized that this could be used to identify important members of society. In future studies, the team will analyze other rock art in the region to better interpret the strange figures.
