Gunung Padang in Indonesia may be the oldest pyramid in the world. The study showing this was published in the journal Archaeological Prospecting.

Gunung Padang is located on top of an extinct volcano in West Java. In the new study, scientists analyzed the pyramid’s structure using seismic tomography, electrical tomography and ground-penetrating radar. They also drilled into the pyramid to determine its age using radiocarbon dating.

As archaeologists found, about 16 thousand years ago, ancient people carved the first figures from cooled lava in the Gunung Padang area. Between 7900 and 6100 BC, another group of people added a layer of brick and stone pillars, and between 2000 and 1100 BC, Indonesians added stone terraces and other elements, giving the pyramid its final shape.

The research team also found some evidence that there may have been hollow chambers inside the structure. Their discoveries challenge conventional thinking and highlight construction possibilities during the last Ice Age.

Previously, for the first time in history, zoologists photographed The rarest rat in the world.
