NATO has announced its intention to create a “military Schengen” for the rapid movement of alliance troops. Lieutenant General Alexander Sollfrank, head of the joint logistics command, talked about these plans in an interview Reuters.

“NATO now has problems with national regulations when transporting troops and ammunition,” he explained.

Sollfrank warned that too much bureaucratic red tape in the military-political bloc hinders the movement of troops across Europe, which could lead to serious delays in the event of a conflict with Russia.

“The challenge of rapid deployment of forces as well as availability of ammunition, fuel, spare parts and food has become even more difficult,” the Lieutenant General said.

Sollfrank said he would like to see a free military transit zone called “military Schengen,” similar to the political Schengen area, that would allow freer movement across much of the European Union.

In June, Ben Hodges, former commander in chief of U.S. Army Europe suggestedthat the creation of a “military Schengen” is necessary.
