SamSMU will teach the robotic arm of German manufacturer KUKA, which aims to create bioengineered structures and personalized implants to print tissue directly on the patient for the treatment of extensive burns, ulcers and other injuries. This topic was explained to socialbites.ca at the NTI Competence Center “Bionic Engineering in Medicine” at SamSMU.

This robotic arm is equipped with a special nozzle through which hydrogels and bioinks are fed, the composition of which is optimally adapted to the patient’s own tissues.

“As an advanced bioprinting device, the robotic arm can be used both in the laboratory and directly on the patient. During the operation, the movements of the robotic arms are synchronized with the biomaterial supply, taking into account the movement of the body (for example, during breathing). In this way, complex and extensive burns, ulcers and tissue damage can be eliminated.” it will be possible to improve it,” Larisa Volova, head of the Center for Biomedical Cell Products of the SamSMU NTI Central Committee, director of the SamSMU Biotechnology Research Institute, told socialbites.ca.

The inks used are hydrogels obtained from allogeneic biomaterials that are most suitable for the patient’s own tissues in terms of their composition.

Thanks to the feedback principle, the robotic arm can remember the actions that the operator taught it by moving the manipulator. When additionally equipped with a drill or cutter, the robotic arm can operate as a complex six-axis machine and be used to produce complex, personalized implants that fully correspond to the geometry of a given 3D model.
