The southern cassowary, which scientists consider the world’s most dangerous bird to humans, was caught swimming off the east coast of Australia. This was reported by Science Alert.

Beachgoers on Australia’s east coast reported seeing a southern cassowary on October 31 (Casuarius casuarius johnsonii) swimming in the ocean. According to the owner of the campsite where the cassowary was spotted, the bird may have been brought in by the current.

“Cassowaries can swim and enter the water to move from one side of the river to the other, or if they feel threatened by domestic dogs or another Cassowary due to a territorial dispute,” Wildlife Warden Stephen Clough told the press. From Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS).

These large animals, along with ostriches, represent the two most dangerous bird species for humans: an encounter with them can be fatal. A review published in 2006 reported 150 recorded cassowary attacks on humans. 75% of these attacks occurred as a result of people trying to feed the birds, which is not recommended.

Cassowaries play an important role in the proliferation of rainforest trees, some of which cannot germinate until they pass through the digestive system of a large herbivore. There are now about four thousand cassowaries left in Queensland. They are listed among endangered animals.
