Scientists from the University of Michigan (USA) found that scammers mostly deceive elderly people with poor health. Research results published In the National Survey on Healthy Aging (NPHA)
A study conducted by scientists showed that many adults (aged 50-80) have been subjected to fraud attempts before. Men were more likely than women to report that someone was trying to deceive them. As a rule, attackers try to find bank card or account information by contacting people by phone, SMS or e-mail.
Scientists also found that disabled people, people with various memory disorders and poor health are more likely to become victims of scammers. Additionally, people who were subjected to fraudulent extortion of money said it had a serious negative impact on their financial, physical or mental health.
The study’s authors added that older Americans lose more than a billion dollars a year to fraud committed by criminals. Scientists believe that measures should be taken to inform senior citizens about fraudulent activities. This will save the health and money of people over 50.
