A skin condition known as psoriasis can increase the risk of stroke and heart attack. In this respect reports Daily mail.

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks healthy skin cells, accelerating their turnover and causing red, scaly patches to form on the skin. The exact cause of psoriasis is unknown. The disease is thought to be related to genetics, stress, infections, and certain medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

It turns out that psoriasis can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. The mechanisms underlying this relationship are not fully understood.

A recent study by scientists at the University of Padua in Italy found that about 30% of patients with psoriasis have reduced blood flow in small blood vessels (called microvascular dysfunction) in the absence of heart disease or blockages in large arteries. Researchers suggest that microvascular dysfunction, which increases the risk of heart disease, is caused by inflammation in the body due to psoriasis.

Experts at the American Academy of Dermatology say treating moderate to severe psoriasis may reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack. Colleagues at the UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence recommend that patients with this disease undergo annual examinations for the prevention and early detection of cardiovascular disease.

It is stated that it is possible to reduce the likelihood of such diseases and alleviate the course of psoriasis with drug therapy and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Alcohol consumption should be minimized and physical activity should be increased.

Previous scientists warned about skin manifestations of joint diseases.
