Scientists from Stanford University (USA) found that it takes seven months for the brain to recover after stopping binge drinking. The results of the study were announced magazine Alcohol.
Alcoholics experience impairment in higher cognitive functions due to thinning of areas in the cerebral cortex. Previous research has shown that some parts of the brain can recover after you stop drinking alcohol, but it’s unknown how long this takes.
The authors analyzed MRI scans of 40 people with alcoholism in treatment. Brain scans were taken one week, one month, and 7.3 months after quitting alcohol.
The most pronounced restoration of the cortex in people with alcoholism was observed after 7.3 months from the date of abstinence. At the end of this period, the brain returned to normal in 24 of 34 cases. The most intense improvement occurred between the first week and the first month of quitting alcohol, after which the process slowed down. This process was often slower in people with high blood pressure or cholesterol levels and in smokers.
The researchers emphasize the importance of future studies to determine whether restoration of the structures has an impact on brain function.
