MISIS University scientists have developed a new Russian fire-resistant steel grade for industrial and civil purposes: shopping and business centers, warehouses, transport hubs, multi-storey garages. Metal structures made of the material can withstand a control temperature of 600°C for approximately 30 minutes without loss of load-bearing capacity, creating an additional time reserve for the evacuation of people. MISIS told socialbites.ca about this.

The need for such fire-resistant materials arose after a fire at the Kemerovo Zimnyaya Vishnya shopping center in 2018. The number of fires in shopping malls and warehouses increased last year, so the development of such materials is extremely important.

The created steel can last up to 30 minutes in the absence of fire-resistant coatings. This makes it possible to reduce the cost of metal structures by half (saving up to 60 thousand rubles per ton), reduce the installation time of construction projects, and also prevent toxic emissions from coatings in case of fire; leads to tragic consequences. In addition, the high strength characteristics of the rolled products in question make it possible to reduce the weight of building structures, which reduces installation times and the overall construction period.

“We solved the problem of increasing the fire resistance of steel structures by controlling the composition of alloying elements and the thermomechanical processing conditions during production. The necessary effect was achieved due to the formation of a fine-grained ferrite-bainitic structure in rolled products using special temperature-speed and deformation technological regimes of controlled rolling and accelerated cooling,” explained Alexander from NUST MISIS to socialbites.ca, head of the research laboratory “Hybrid Nanostructured Materials” Komissarov.

Fire tests were carried out at the All-Russian Fire Defense Institute of the Ministry of Emergencies of Russia at the Central Research Institute of Building Structures (TsNIISK) named after. VA Kucherenko with the participation of the Association for the Development of Steel Construction.

Negotiations are currently ongoing with one of the country’s largest developers about using fire-resistant rolled steel on the first floors of residences with social facilities.

Previously at MISIS was created Long-acting fertilizer made from glass and urea.
