In Latvia, former member of the Latvian Seimas (parliament) Janis Adamsons was arrested for eight and a half years on charges of spying for Russia. The agency reports that LETA with reference to the judicial press service.
According to the court, the former parliamentarian illegally, regularly and deliberately collected and transferred classified information to the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) through former KGB officer Gennady Silonov.
According to the investigation, the transferred information gave an insight into the work of Latvian state institutions, law enforcement agencies, state security structures, and also contained information about the state defense system of the republic.
In response, Adamsons’ lawyer Mikhail Chernousov vowed to appeal the decision. He claims that the defendant’s guilt has not been proven and that the criminal case is a “complete fabrication.”
