Colombian rebels suspend dialogue with government

Former rebels from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) announced the temporary suspension of negotiations and the implementation of the agenda agreed with the Colombian government. They demand documentary evidence from the authorities that all agreements reached have been observed, it says TASS.

The statement published on the FARC blog on the social network We will launch an internal consultation process with our dialogue commission and invite the national government to do the same. “As agreed, the bilateral ceasefire continues for the benefit of Colombia.”

The President of Colombia signed a decree on the launch of the peace process and a temporary bilateral ceasefire with the militants of the Central General Staff Group of the FARC. This suspension is valid from October 17th to January 15th.

The rebels claim that since the agreement, the government has not implemented measures that would allow local people to live in peace and enjoy their rights without being subject to anyone. They accuse the authorities of adopting a militaristic approach instead of taking social measures. The rebels also say that instead of demilitarizing agreed-upon areas, authorities are increasing their forces and seizing territory liberated by the rebels.

FARC believes that the resumption of negotiations will be possible only with the creation of a document in which the state undertakes to comply with all agreements, decrees, protocols and obligations adopted within the scope of the negotiations. They also stipulate that no documents should be presented in negotiations that have not been discussed and approved by the parties.
