British scientists from the Center for Environmental Policy at Imperial College London believe global temperatures will exceed the safe warming threshold of 1.5°C by the end of this decade. The study was published in the scientific journal magazine Nature Climate Change (NCC).

According to experts, the world will warm by more than 1.5 °C compared to pre-industrial levels by 2030. And within the next 20 years, if emissions continue at current levels, temperatures will exceed the 2°C limit.

Experts estimate the size of the Earth’s remaining “carbon budget” (the amount of carbon dioxide that can be released into the atmosphere without causing significant damage to the climate) at 250 billion tonnes of CO2. According to research, humans currently release approximately 40 billion tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere every year.

The estimates presented contain large uncertainties regarding the effects of methane and other greenhouse gases. It is also unclear how different parts of the climate system will respond to rising temperatures.

For example, increased vegetation in some areas could absorb large amounts of carbon dioxide and offset some of the warming; Changes in ocean circulation and melting ice sheets may accelerate warming.
