American astronaut Thomas Mattingly passed away at the age of 87. This was announced by US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Director Bill Nelson in a statement published on: Web site agencies.

Thomas Mattingly was the command module pilot during the Apollo 16 mission, which took place from April 16 to April 27, 1972. This mission marked the fifth human landing on the Moon.

In the NASA director’s statement, it was stated that Mattingly provided significant assistance in the rescue of the Apollo 13 mission crew.

During this mission, a liquid oxygen tank exploded, causing the ship’s main power system to fail and problems with the air renewal system in the command module. Nelson stated that Mattingly was unable to participate in the flight due to health issues, but remained on Earth and made critical decisions in real time to successfully return the damaged spacecraft and the Apollo 13 crew.
