Scientists from the University of Copenhagen found that whole grain foods such as cereal, bread and rice are beneficial to children’s cardiovascular health. Research results published at Science Direct.
55 children aged 8-13, who were not allergic to whole grains, participated in the four-day study. Scientists collected data on participants’ health conditions; recorded their height, weight and blood pressure. Children were required to eat rice, bread, wheat, oats, corn, and rice for breakfast, lunch, and dinner (along with other meals). In total, you had to eat 150-200 grams of such products per day.
At the end of the experiment, it turned out that this type of diet helped reduce the level of LDL in the participants’ blood. LDL is a low-density lipoprotein whose main function is to transport cholesterol. They are considered highly atherogenic (able to settle in the walls of blood vessels). Blood flow is poor and over time plaques block the artery.
High LDL levels are one of the main causes of atherosclerosis and significantly increase the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases such as coronary heart disease, heart attack, and stroke.
Scientists noted that the mechanisms underlying the positive effects of whole grains on cardiovascular health have not yet been investigated. More research is needed.
