Scientists from the National Institutes of Health in the United States linked an active lifestyle with long work experience and high salaries. Research results published In the journal Clinical Orthopedics and Related Research (CORR).
Scientists conducted a survey in which more than 19 thousand people participated. The survey asked participants whether they had difficulty climbing stairs or were tired of walking several blocks or moving around a room. Based on the responses, researchers assigned each participant one of six mobility categories; The zero category meant that the subject had difficulty coping with all daily tasks that involved physical activity. Participants classified in the fifth category were stated to have “unlimited mobility”.
Participants were observed for ten years. It turns out that a one-level decrease in mobility is accompanied by a decrease in the annual income of participants by as much as $ 3,000 (about 279,730 rubles). At the same time, active people earned $6,500 (606,080 rubles) more per year than sedentary people.
Additionally, exercising once a week significantly increased mobility in older adults. The scientists conducted an additional survey involving participants between the ages of 60 and 80. Two and four years after the survey, the researchers updated the participants’ mobility data. Active people over age 55 were more likely to continue working and earning an income.
