US called ‘irresponsible’ for decision to modernize nuclear bombs

Melissa Park, president of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), said the modernization of B61 nuclear bombs was an irresponsible escalation, especially given the conflicts in Europe and the Middle East. This was reported by RIA News Referring to ICAN press release.

“This is an irresponsible escalation of a new nuclear arms race, and as a result, the United States is calling on other nuclear-weapon states to modernize their nuclear arsenals,” the ICAN chief was quoted as saying in a press release.

Park noted that the use of such weapons would lead to indiscriminate killing of civilians and destruction of critical infrastructure, which would constitute a war crime. According to him, the announcement of such a plan at a time when conflicts involving nuclear-armed states in Europe and the Middle East are at their peak is provocative.

Last week, the Pentagon announced that the US decided upgrade the main B61 atomic bomb to the B61-13 variant without changing the total number of nuclear weapons in their arsenal.
