Scientists from the University of Southern California and the University of Arizona found that a sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of dementia. In this respect reports SciTechDaily.

More than one hundred thousand people participated in the research. For one week, the subjects were required to wear the accelerometer at all times; These devices worked as sensors that detected changes in the position of an object in space. Thus, scientists tracked the motor activities of the participants.

Six years after the end of the experiment, 414 people developed dementia. After adjusting for demographic data (age, gender, education level, genetics) and lifestyle characteristics (physical activity, nutrition, bad habits), a sedentary lifestyle was found to increase the risk of developing dementia.

Scientists noted that the likelihood of contracting this disease increases rapidly if a person remains in a sitting position for 10 hours or more a day. Additionally, taking breaks for physical activity did not reduce the risk of dementia if the total sitting time was 10 hours.

More research is needed to determine the level of physical activity that can offset the negative effects of a sedentary lifestyle.
