Researchers from the University of Copenhagen surveyed more than 2,000 pet owners in the United Kingdom, Denmark and Austria and found that people tend to bond with and care for dogs more than cats. The results are presented in: magazine Frontiers in Veterinary Science.
Survey respondents included 844 dog owners, 872 cat owners, and 401 people who owned both pets. Participants answered questions about health insurance for their pets, willingness to pay for life-saving treatment and emotional attachment to animals.
The results show that people in all three regions tend to value their dogs more than their cats. The difference was largest in Denmark and smaller in Austria. According to the authors, this can be explained by the fact that dogs show more attention and affection to their owners than cats. They also suggest that this difference is likely influenced by cultural factors.
