An international team of scientists from the UK and Indonesia discovered the world’s oldest shark tooth blades during excavations on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. The study was published in the scientific journal magazine Ancient ages.

The team determined that the teeth found originally belonged to tiger sharks. The roots were then pierced and firmly attached to the stems using vegetable threads and glue made from mineral, animal and vegetable substances. Most likely shark knives were used as ritual or military weapons. However, they can also be used for cutting meat and other household chores.

Both specimens were found at archaeological sites attributed to the Toalian culture, a mysterious forager society that lived in southwestern Sulawesi from about 8,000 years ago until an unknown period in the recent past.

Shark tooth knives from Sulawesi may provide the first evidence that a special class of weapons in the Asia-Pacific region has been around much longer than previously thought, scientists said. Previous works of this type date back less than 5 thousand years.
