After the upgrade the bomb should replace part of the B61-7 stock. It will have similar power and higher safety and accuracy indicators than the B61-12, which is currently the most modern modification.
The military department emphasized that the decision to modernize the bomb was not a response to any international incident but “reflected an assessment of the changing security situation in the world.”
