Hundreds of poisonous spiders have invaded a school in Oita Prefecture in western Japan, forcing authorities to cancel a planned competition. In this respect reports Mainichi Shimbun portal.
The spiders were noticed in the schoolyard by one of the teachers; Exterminators who came on call determined that they were the Latrodectus hasselti, or “Australian widow” species. Experts found more than a hundred people and many eggs in the school.
The school had to be closed during cleaning work and competitions planned for Sports Day were cancelled.
The poison of these spiders is not life-threatening, but the bite is quite painful and can cause severe pain lasting several days, in some cases the poison of the “Australian widow” can lead to the development of anaphylactic shock.
