The Supreme Court of Japan abolished the requirement for sterilization before gender reassignment surgery. writes about this Reuters.
The relevant requirement of the existing legislation was deemed to be contrary to the country’s constitution.
Currently, to undergo gender reassignment surgery, Japanese citizens must be of legal age, unmarried, have no minor children, have sexual organs similar to those of the opposite sex, and be spayed or infertile.
The issue of whether those seeking gender reassignment must meet criteria regarding the appearance of genitals was referred to a lower court for consideration by Japan’s Supreme Court.
Before that, the German Council of Ministers approved Draft law that will make legal gender reassignment easier. The document states that changes to personal data will be possible with regular application. Citizens will no longer need to explain their decisions in any way or provide medical justification.
