Scientists from King Faisal University in Saudi Arabia found that red grapes protect against diabetes, heart disease and premature aging. In addition, these fruits have antitumor and anti-inflammatory effects due to the polyphenols they contain. Research results published In the nutrition magazine.
Polyphenols are compounds that give color to the flowers and fruits of plants. Polyphenols exhibit various biological properties such as anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral. In their study, the scientists focused on resveratrol, a compound synthesized as a protective response that increases the plant’s resistance to various stressful situations.
A clinical study showed that 250 mg of resveratrol daily for three months reduced glycosylated hemoglobin levels and systolic blood pressure in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Additionally, this compound may reduce cardiac hypertrophy (the increase in the thickness of the heart wall that develops when the heart is chronically overloaded) and improve blood circulation.
Polyphenols also have an antioxidant effect. They prevent oxidative processes in the body, allowing cells and tissues to stay alive longer. This effect is associated with protection against premature aging.
The study authors noted that their work could contribute to the development of new drugs in which resveratrol is the active ingredient. These drugs are potentially effective in controlling obesity, diabetes and hypertension.
