BestDoctor group of companies conducted a study on paying attention to sexual health. It turned out that about half of Russians rarely undergo examinations to prevent sexually transmitted diseases. BestDoctor’s press service reported this to socialbites.ca.
The results of the survey showed that the majority of Russians ignore paying attention to sexual health; 46% of respondents undergo preventive examinations only in extreme cases where there are cause for concern. Only 18% are regularly tested for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) such as syphilis, HIV infection, HPV, gonorrhea, chlamydia, ureaplasmosis, mycoplasmosis, trichomoniasis and candidiasis.
Urologist Anna Siminovich from the BestDoctor group of companies notes that in most cases, sexually transmitted diseases are asymptomatic, but later they can lead to diseases of the pelvic organs, genital organs and even infertility, and also increase the risk of cancer.
“If one of the partners has an inflammatory disease in the genital organs, both should be examined to identify asymptomatic carriers,” the doctor added.
However, only 13% of the survey participants stated that they were ready to undergo a joint examination and necessary tests. Some participants shared that they were tested for STDs only when they changed sexual partners, or were not tested at all.
Russians are mostly tested for HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis, said Georgy Kruglikov, director of the Medtech business unit of the BestDoctor group of companies. Thanks to the development of new technologies such as PCR methods and immunochromatographic tests, results can be obtained faster and with higher accuracy.
