Scientists have tried to track the effect of the Mediterranean diet on health. For this, they conducted a study involving 121,513 people. The subjects’ ages ranged from 30 to 75 years old. Researchers collected information about participants’ eating habits and analyzed data from their medical records to assess their health status.

It was revealed that people who consume the foods prescribed by the Mediterranean diet have a reduced risk of contracting 32 chronic diseases. This type of diet involves eating vegetables, fruits, seafood, fish, olive oil and cheese. Scientists note that the diet reduces the likelihood of developing cardiovascular and cardiometabolic diseases, many types of cancer and diabetes.

Additionally, the Mediterranean diet may protect against dementia (including Alzheimer’s disease) if the proportion of antioxidant-rich foods in the diet is increased. They are found in fruits, broccoli, green tea, coffee, dried fruits and dark chocolate.
