A study conducted by scientists at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York showed a correlation between taking male enhancement pills and a reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease. In this respect reports Daily mail.

More than 27 thousand people over the age of 65 participated in the research. The researchers collected information about the subjects’ health status and the medications they were taking. Then special participants took tests to assess the level of cognitive abilities (ability to perceive, assimilate and process information).

Men who took Viagra performed better in tests than those who did not use the enhancing drug. Scientists estimate that such pills reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease in men by 62%. Viagra also had a positive effect on women’s cognitive abilities. Participants who took the drug were 47% less likely to get the disease.

Scientists suggest that the active substance in Viagra and other effective drugs blocks an enzyme that promotes the formation of amyloid plaques in the cerebral cortex. Such protein deposits are thought to be the main cause of Alzheimer’s disease.
