Every person in the world has the same 24 hours in a day, but how they divide those hours between work, sleep, studying and play varies greatly, he writes Scientific American.

Scientists recently collected existing data on how people around the world allocate their time and used it to create a graph of the average “global human day.” They found that we spend more than a third of our time in bed, with the remaining time falling into three categories. Scientists tried to determine whether the distribution of tasks in the daily schedule affects people.

Activities such as farming took much more time in poorer countries than in rich countries, while other activities, such as transportation from one place to another, took about the same number of hours per day.

As a result, the research found that the average person spends relatively little time (about five minutes) on activities that directly alter the environment and impact climate change. These activities included: energy production, waste disposal, and cultivation of non-agricultural crops.

“We need to move away from fossil fuels and produce more renewable energy,” says study co-author Eric Galbraith of McGill University.
