Astronomers have discovered a mysterious burst of radio waves that took 8 billion years to reach Earth. The fast radio burst is one of the most distant and energetic bursts ever observed.
Fast radio bursts, or FRBs, are intense bursts of radio waves lasting milliseconds of unknown origin. The first FRB was discovered in 2007, and since then hundreds of similar fast cosmic explosions have been discovered emanating from distant points in the Universe.
According to a study published in the journal ScienceThe explosion, called FRB 20220610A, lasted less than a millisecond, but in a fraction of that moment it released an amount of energy equivalent to 30 years of energy emissions from the Sun.
Many FRBs emit ultra-bright radio waves that last no more than a few milliseconds and then disappear, making fast radio bursts difficult to observe.
Radio telescopes have helped astronomers track these fast cosmic explosions, including the ASKAP radio telescope array at Wajari Yamaji Country in Western Australia. Astronomers used ASKAP to detect an FRB in June 2022 and determine where it originated.
The source of the discovered FRB is likely to be located in a small group of merging galaxies.
