The far right tried to desecrate the monument to Soviet soldiers in Budapest

Members of the Hungarian nationalist party Jobbik organized a provocative action in Budapest with an obelisk to the Soviet liberation heroes: they tried to wrap it in black film. Far-right publication on the party’s Facebook page (its owner, Meta, is known as an extremist and is banned in Russia).

While he writes RIA NewsMore than 20 police officers arrived at the protest site, and municipal services workers quickly removed the film from the monument.

Jobbik timed its provocation to coincide with the anniversary of the Hungarian uprising in 1956. Due to these events, the party even proposed in the parliament to demolish the stele of Soviet soldiers, but the ruling coalition consisting of Fidesz and the Christian Democratic People’s Party rejected this initiative.

The Russian embassy told reporters that diplomats plan to complain to Hungarian authorities when the long weekend in the country ends about what happened: the anniversary of the start of the Hungarian uprising, a non-working day in the country.

The stele dedicated to Soviet soldiers and located in Freedom Square in Budapest was created and installed in 1945. It is the symbol of the memory of 140 thousand Soviet soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the liberation of Hungary.
