American psychologists from Villanova University in Pennsylvania studied the effect of insomnia on the quality of romantic relationships. The study was published in the scientific journal magazine Journal of Social and Personal Relationships (JSPR).

“For many years, relationship researchers paid little attention to the details—the everyday things—that could predict the outcome of a relationship. Sleep is one of those little things. “Long-term sleep deprivation remains a serious and very common problem that can impact well-being,” said study author Erica Slotter.

To answer this question about the relationship between sleep and relationship quality, psychologists conducted a series of three studies involving different groups, including college students and people who were married or had regular partners.

The results showed a significant association between insufficient sleep and lower perceived relationship quality. Participants who went sleep deprived for a month tended to negatively evaluate their interactions with their partner or spouse.

Researchers also found that changes in sleep quality were associated with increased levels of anger and rage, both toward the partner and other aspects of life.

“In summary, less sleep caused people to experience less intimacy, love, satisfaction, trust, passion, and commitment in their relationships,” Erica Slotter said.
