The European Union has decided to implement a new control system at the borders of the Union countries, where digital checks will replace visa stamps on passports. EU representatives write that they reached a consensus on the new system at the Home Affairs Council meeting held in Luxembourg Netherlands News.
The EES entry-exit system will be operational in the second half of 2024. For its operation, special self-service kiosks will be placed at the EU border. Citizens will need to scan their passports themselves so that the system checks personal data, the presence of fingerprints in the database, and information about the date and place of arrival and departure.
The EES will be valid in all EU states, but will not apply to long-term visa holders or legal residents in those states. Additionally, the system will not affect EU island members such as Cyprus and Iceland.
