Scientists from University College London have discovered that taking up hobbies in old age can improve mental health. Research results published In the journal Nature.
The study analyzed data from 93,263 older adults aged 65 and over. The proportion of respondents who said they had a hobby varied significantly between countries; 51% of Spanish subjects reported having a hobby. In Denmark, 96% of participants had a favorite activity; 95.8% in Sweden, 94.4% in Switzerland.
It turns out that having a hobby has a positive effect on the psyche. Participants who previously experienced symptoms of depression reported improved health after finding an activity they enjoyed. It was also observed that people with hobbies were more satisfied with their lives than those without hobbies.
Doing what they love helps older people keep their minds and bodies in good shape, the study’s authors explained. Hobbies also help increase their self-confidence. Scientists suggest that programs aimed at introducing older people to various hobbies can improve their quality of life.
